Mouse Takes the Cheese

Mouse Takes the Cheese

Lightning Bolt is my version of a game by Ed Dunlop in his book Mouse on a Mission. If making Bible review games is daunting to you, I highly recommend his book. It has printables and detailed instructions for many games. Not every single game is current or necessarily useable (overhead games are pretty obsolete nowadays), but there are enough good ones to make it worth the purchase for a newbie to review games.

GAME CONSTRUCTION

Make 22 squares with a mouse on the front. On the backs, make 10 with cheese, 8 with a grocery store, and 4 with a cat. Make a score card with each picture from the backs of the game pieces. The cheese is 50 points, the store is 200, and the cat is 0. Laminate or use contact paper to extend the life of the game.  (If there is a Mardel's bookstore or a teacher supply store in your area they usually offer very good prices on lamination.) Add a small amount of self-adhesive velcro to the backs of the pieces. Attach to the board and you are ready to go.

GAMEPLAY

Mr. Mouse is hungry for cheese! He needs to go to the grocery store to get the best cheese. If, on the way to the store, he finds cheese he wins 50 points. If he makes it to the store, he can find the best, most delicious cheese and he wins 200 points! But watch out! There is a cat on the prowl. If he finds the cat, he is scared and drops his cheese in his rush to run away!

The child who answers the review question correctly comes to the front to play the game.  They can choose up to 3 squares per turn.  The square they choose is turned over to reveal how many points they win.  The points are added up after their 3 selections and awarded to their team.  If in the gameplay the child finds a cat they lose any previous points for that turn, and their turn is over.  For example, if the first piece reveals 5o points (cheese) and the second piece has a cat, the 50 points are lost and no more pieces are chosen.
